Biodiversity & Habitat Assessment and Monitoring

Biodiversity is essential to life on Earth. To sustain a growing population, we need to improve existing infrastructure, embrace renewable energy sources and develop ways of getting clean water and clean power to the places they are needed the most. We also need to preserve and restore biodiversity alongside any changes we make to the natural environment. APEM Group support our clients with assessing, modelling and monitoring species and habitats, to understand the impacts their projects will have on biodiversity, and the opportunities that will arise to improve the natural environment and ensure they meet environmental regulations.

Related Services

Marine Wildlife Surveys

Using best practice surveying and data capture methods for marine mammals, reptiles, bats and birds, analysing and interpreting data to produce baseline studies and deliver environmental statement chapters for offshore wind, ports and harbours and marine infrastructure.

Amphibian Surveys

The presence of populations, and sometimes even individuals, of protected species of amphibians like great crested newt can affect planning permission. Consent can be delayed and even refused if inadequate information is provided on the species in question. Our data-led and science-based approach provides reassurance to developers and regulators.

Monitoring and impact assessments

A comprehensive range of walkover surveys and population impact analysis, covering aquatic and terrestrial environments. Our field scientists have been providing expert advice to a wide range of clients for many years, who trust us to deliver an expert and responsive service.

Reptile Surveys

Our experienced consultants support clients through the process of gathering data and information for licensing applications. Evaluating data, assessing impacts, identifying mitigation actions and preparing reports and plans to support an application to the planning authority and the statutory nature conservation body.

Mammal Surveys

Desk studies, scoping and detailed population surveys for a wide range of mammals, including protected species like dormice, otter and water vole, as well as badgers and marsupials. Advice on mitigation and compensation measures, monitoring and mitigation plans.

Marsupial Surveys

Determining the likelihood of the presence of marsupials using specialised survey methods, desk studies and assessments. Kangaroo Management Plans that are ecologically sustainable, with management approaches that are proportionate, based on scientific information and monitored on an ongoing basis.

Bat Surveys

Our teams are providing industries, communities, developers and regulators with new approaches to bat surveying, new technologies and new data capture methods to make sure bats are detected, protected and thriving.

Bird Surveys

From collision risk assessment and modelling to nest box inspections, we offer considered advice, surveys, monitoring, forecasting and assessment to understand the presence and distribution of birds including protected and threatened species.

Habitat Surveys

Before a project is carried out on a protected site, evidence and information must be provided to the regulator to identify the ecological effects. Our specialist teams support our clients throughout the process, including providing baseline, ecological and impact studies for peatlands and wetlands.

Tree and Woodland Surveys

Supporting our clients with tree mapping, inventory and operational management for construction projects, landscaping, property development. Determining woodland growth and health as well as supporting with ecological supervision of vegetation clearance, weed surveys and management strategies.

Natural Capital

Helping clients to use the natural capital approach to evaluate, protect and improve the natural environment through the projects they deliver. Supporting with Natural Capital and ecosystem monitoring, water resource and quality assessments, catchment investigations and management, habitat restoration and monitoring programmes.

Biodiversity Assessments

Using a variety of surveying methods from aerial surveys, drone surveys, thermal imaging, LiDAR, remote sensing and ground surveys, we provide our clients with landscape-scale biodiversity assessments for large and complex developments.

Botanical Surveys

Botanical surveys including mapping and classification, inventory and taxonomy including the identification of invasive and non-native species as well as vegetation offset site registration and compliance for Biodiversity Net Gain purposes.

Aerial Surveys

Using digital aerial imagery to identify and locate leaks and map pipe routes for both clean water and wastewater networks. Using thermal sensors, our teams also gather thermographic data to inspect the condition of utility assets, including water and wastewater treatment facilities and buried pipelines.
