APEM appointed to support Port of Neath maintenance dredging programme

16 September 2026 – The proposed works are intended to restore and maintain safe navigable access within the River Neath entrance channel, supporting the continued operation of the port and its role in serving regional industry and commerce.

NPA is preparing a Band 2 marine licence application to Natural Resources Wales for a proposed five-year maintenance dredging programme. The current methodology under consideration involves land-based dredging within defined areas during suitable low-water periods, with excavated material transported and placed within a proposed defined low-water placement area.

As part of the commission, APEM is providing environmental assessment, marine licensing and project management support to assist NPA in preparing the technical and environmental documentation required to support its application.

The scope of work includes:

• Preparation of a Maintenance Dredging Method Statement
• A Water Framework Directive Assessment
• A Marine Invasive Non-Native Species Biosecurity Risk Assessment and Management Plan
• A Welsh National Marine Plan Signposting Document

The project draws upon the collective expertise of APEM in marine licensing, environmental assessment and regulatory support, helping clients navigate environmental requirements and assemble proportionate evidence for marine consent applications.
