Habitat survey and protected species survey calendars: timing is everything

APEM Group supports our clients to deliver sustainable development, protecting the natural environment and aiming to leave it in a better state than we found it. APEM Group carry out surveys and assessments in a variety of ecosystems every year across the world.

For large developments, it is recommended that a professional ecologist is engaged as early as possible in the design process, to adequately assess how designated sites and protected and notable species could interact with the proposals. Intertidal surveys of the seabed reveal how habitats might be affected by offshore developments, and species-specific surveys of terrestrial and freshwater habitats reveal information about protected or invasive species.

Ecological surveys are often seasonal. Some species should be surveyed at specific times of the year, or surveys undertaken throughout the year to capture breeding, wintering and migration periods and track seasonal changes to habitats. A vital part of the planning and consenting process is the collection of robust baseline data, and survey delays can affect the planning process and hold up large developments both onshore and offshore.

Check out our survey calendars below to make sure your surveys are booked and ready to go at the right time. APEM Group have been undertaking habitat and species surveys from the air, over sea and on land for over 30 years and are well placed to support renewables, water and infrastructure projects.
