Nature in Focus: APEM Group’s Picture of the Year 2023 Winners Revealed
Welcome to the grand reveal of APEM Group’s Picture of the Year 2023!
At APEM Group, our cherished annual Picture of the Year competition is a celebration of the incredible creativity, talent, and passion of our team members. This year’s competition was no exception, showcasing breathtaking snapshots of the natural world captured by our staff across the globe. As we have done in previous years, the winning image will be the featured thumbnail in our ESG and Net Zero report, alongside other key content that highlights our dedication to the environment.
Throughout the year, staff voted for their favourite images, narrowing the field down to 12 stunning monthly winners. The final decision was then made by APEM Group’s CEO, Leah McGimpsey, who selected the top three photographs of 2024.
First Place: Waxwing
Captured by Jalal Khan, Ornithology Consultant
Congratulations Jalal! For a second year in a row, Jalal has wowed us all with his extraordinary talent behind the lens.
The Waxwing image really stood out this year in its ability to capture a relatively rare sighting of the species doing exactly what they come to the UK to do – which is to gorge on winter berries! The bird’s vibrant colours, silky feathers, and plump body are brilliantly photographed and huge credit to the photographer on such an achievement.
– Leah McGimpsey, Chief Executive Officer, APEM Group
Second Place: Ghost Crab
Captured by Freddy Child, Flight Operations Manager
What a beautiful capturing of the Ghost Crab! The detail and lighting in particular stand out, really highlighting the intricacies of their bodies – and the characteristic of a notably larger claw-bearing leg than the other! Striking image, congratulations.
– Leah McGimpsey, Chief Executive Officer, APEM Group
Third Place: White-Lipped Tree Frog
Captured by Rhys Sharry, Attexo Ecologist
This submission really caught my eye in how it’s framed so cleanly and clearly. The detail and brightness of the image works so well with the dark background – a real photographic delight. And amphibians are such fascinating creatures to observe and capture – congratulations to the photographer!
