Last month APEM Group sponsored the Global Offshore Wind conference where the team attended Rt Hon Ed Miliband’s keynote speaker session, followed by a discussion with Dan McGrail, Chief Executive of Renewable UK. We’ve summarised our key takeaways from the sessions…
First and foremost, it was clear that Ed Miliband had done his research. This was visible in his understanding of the challenges that the UK renewables industry faces – planning delays, grid delays, the growing skills gap supply chain challenges – referred to by him as ‘the four horsemen of the apocalypse’.
He stated that Labour have pledged to tackle these challenges from day one, including a whole government effort involving every department and, providing a go-to place for developers to help resolve issues. Ed Miliband believes that the creation of a publicly owned company, GB Energy, will help support the transition from oil and gas in a fair and just way, through partnering with the private sector to help derisk new technologies, such as floating offshore wind, and boosting the UK supply chain, technical skills and port infrastructure.
Throughout his speech, Ed Miliband certainly seemed very passionate and committed to promoting the UK renewables industry.
He really understood the industry frustrations and wants the government to be part of the solution and not the barrier.
