APEM Webinar | The Growing Role of Desalination in Water Supply
In this on-demand webinar, experts from APEM and the wider water sector will explore the environmental, regulatory and engineering considerations...
APEM has achieved a positive outcome following a Health & Safety audit undertaken by Anglian Water Services (AWS) as part of an ongoing estuarine water quality and sediment monitoring programme.
APEM is currently delivering several water quality monitoring projects across England, including large-scale estuarine water quality and sediment sampling on behalf of Anglian Water Services Ltd (AWS). The project supports nutrient investigations in Transitional and Coastal (TraC) waters across three key study areas: The Wash, the Stour and Orwell estuaries, and the Blackwater Outer, Crouch, and Colne estuaries. As part of the project’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and operational excellence, a field Health & Safety (H&S) audit was undertaken in June 2026 to review the delivery of the monitoring programme.
During the audit, APEM’s Project Manager and field survey team demonstrated how water quality and sediment surveys are planned and delivered safely, effectively and efficiently within challenging estuarine environments. The team showcased survey methodologies, and the robust health and safety processes used in the field that underpin field operations. This included a comprehensive risk assessment, safe systems of work and site-specific mitigation measures.
The audit highlighted the professionalism, technical expertise, and strong safety culture embedded throughout APEM’s field operations. Survey staff demonstrated a thorough understanding of site-specific risks, clear communication procedures, and the effective implementation of control measures during all stages of the survey programme.
The audit resulted in highly positive feedback, with APEM achieving a score of 95% and receiving recognition for the professionalism, technical expertise and strong safety culture demonstrated by the project team. The successful outcome reinforces APEM’s reputation for delivering high-quality environmental monitoring programmes safely and efficiently, while supporting clients in addressing the growing challenges associated with Transitional and Coastal waters. This work builds on APEM’s broader expertise in TraC investigations, helping water companies better understand nutrient pressures, meet regulatory requirements and support sustainable water management across the UK. “This is a great result for the team. The audit highlighted the strong safety culture, professionalism and expertise that APEM brings to the programme, and that’s something we’ve seen throughout our work together. The team is operating in complex environments, and it’s encouraging to see that commitment to safety go hand in hand with the delivery of high-quality monitoring and data collection.
Being safer every day is about more than compliance. Itβs about creating a culture where everyone feels empowered to stop, think and act safely, ensuring our people return home to their families at the end of every day. We’re proud to see this reflected in our partner organisations.”

This successful audit outcome reinforces APEM’s commitment to technical excellence, operational rigour and the safe delivery of high-quality environmental monitoring programmes. As environmental and regulatory challenges continue to evolve across the water sector, organisations increasingly rely on trusted scientific partners to provide the data, insight and expertise needed to support sustainable water management and informed decision-making.
